CGS Consultation Service

Since 1964, The Council of Graduate Schools has organized consulting services for member and nonmember institutions, boards and state agencies for the purpose of improving the administration of graduate education.

Drawing on the rich diversity and expertise of over 500 member institutions, CGS works with the requesting institution to formulate a set of objectives for the consultation, recommends an ideal consultation team and handles the administrative arrangements for the consultation.  Using its comprehensive knowledge of the CGS membership, CGS recommends Consultation Teams (typically consisting of 1 to 3 individuals) who are experts in the consultation topic and have experience in institutions that are peers of the requesting institution.

Examples of Consultation Service assistance include the following topic areas:

  • Effective organization of the graduate school
  • Building an inclusive graduate community
  • Professional Master's degree programs
  • Administration of graduate fellowship and assistantship programs
  • Organizing effective program review systems
  • Developing new graduate programs
  • Preparing for and responding to accreditation
  • Integrating research administration with the graduate school
  • Responsible conduct of research
  • Organizing and efficient graduate admissions process
  • Ph.D. Completion and Attrition management
  • Constructing and using databases in graduate administration
  • Preparing Future Faculty
