At the CGS Summer Workshop in Denver this past summer, Dr. Adam Briggle from the University of North Texas gave a plenary talk: “In Dialogue with Our Publics: Research and Scholarship in 2017.”  One of his questions particularly resonated with me: “How do we put ethical considerations at the forefront of STEM training?”

As doctoral candidates near the end of their time as graduate students, many begin considering completing a postdoctoral appointment.  This is a time of great importance as the choices they make will affect the path of their careers.  The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) has recognized this need and believes that the NPA can fulfill a unique role in assisting graduate students and those who guide this process.

Four out of Five: A Closer Look into Master’s Degrees

A large majority of graduate students in the United States pursue master’s degrees. According to the most recent CGS/GRE Survey of Graduate Enrollment and Degrees (GE&D), more than twice as many applications for admission were submitted to master’s programs than doctoral programs, and four out of five first-time graduate students enrolled in Fall 2016 were enrolled in programs leading to a master’s degree or a graduate certificate.

In almost 20 years in graduate education, I have come to learn there are a myriad of opportunities to promote and showcase the contributions of graduate students and programs at our universities. My original venture into advocacy for graduate education was with federal and state legislative officials.
