Completing the Circle: Supporting the Success of Native Graduate Students

Every University in North America is built on lands appropriated, bargained, or stolen from the Indigenous people who occupied this continent for millennia before the arrival of European peoples. Land acknowledgment statements are important ways for universities to acknowledge this history, but the ethical, moral, and cultural obligations of a university to repair, strengthen, and deepen relationships with sovereign tribes should extend beyond these statements.

At the University of Montana, we have built recent momentum in support for Native graduate students by empowering Native faculty, staff, and researchers who were on campus in other capacities, but whose talents and insights have led to new models for mentorship. Read More.

Empowering Humanities Graduate Students Through Internships

This summer, sixteen Wayne State Humanities Clinic interns are working with eighteen non-profit community partners throughout Detroit. Projects require data analysis, technical writing, historical documentation, and critical thinking—skills that humanities graduate students gain through their academic training. The Humanities Clinic, a graduate internship program, gives Wayne State graduate students an opportunity to practice these skills outside of the classroom. Read more.

Graduate Education Now Has Its Own Caucus in the House of Representatives

In mid-July, CGS attended the launch of the Graduate Research and Development (GRAD) Caucus. This new bipartisan caucus in the House of Representatives was formed to address the needs and issues of graduate researchers, inform fellow members of Congress on the impact of graduate research, and develop policies that benefit graduate researchers and their research. Read more.
