Creating a STEM Identity in Graduate School - An IGE/ECR Collaborative Event

By Kelley Karnes

The Innovations in Graduate Education (IGE) Hub and the EDU Core Research (ECR) Hub recently co-hosted a collaborative event focused on STEM identity formation in graduate education. The program brought together researchers, administrators, and faculty to explore strategies for helping graduate students grow into confident, self-identified scientists.

The event featured presentations from project teams at Boise State University, Clemson University, and TERC. Speakers shared research findings and practical approaches for cultivating STEM identity and how to shift students from seeing themselves primarily as learners to embracing their roles as scientists and scholars. Presenters also highlighted STEM identity formation as a critical lever for addressing imposter syndrome and strengthening early scholar agency.
