CGS Releases New Resource for Supporting Fair and Inclusive Graduate Programs

By Kelley Karnes

CGS and the EGE Resource Center are proud to announce the release of Supporting Fair and Inclusive Graduate Programs: A Resource for Faculty and Universities, a timely guide designed to help institutions support fairness and inclusion in graduate education following the 2023 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard/UNC and recent federal and state actions.

Developed with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, this resource synthesizes insights from legal experts, faculty, and graduate deans and offers actionable strategies in three areas: recruitment and admissions, program culture, and mentoring—grounded in both legal guidance and promising practices from institutions across the country.

The resource is designed to support universities in remaining both legally compliant and mission-driven in supporting access and opportunity for all students, in conversation with university counsel. With concrete examples and tools for implementation, Supporting Fair and Inclusive Graduate Programs empowers faculty and graduate administrators to foster environments where students from all backgrounds can thrive—ensuring the next generation of researchers and professionals are prepared to meet workforce demands.

This guide is a companion piece to an earlier resource, Navigating the Post-SFFA Landscape: Advancing Equity-Minded, Law-Attentive Priority Actions in Graduate, Undergraduate and Professional Higher Education, developed by EducationCounsel and designed to help higher education leaders, policymakers, and their legal counsel understand and navigate the 2023 Supreme Court’s SFFA decision.
