Named in honor of the first president of the Council of Graduate Schools and first presented in 1971, the Arlt Award recognizes a young scholar-teacher who has written a book deemed to have made an outstanding contribution to scholarship in the humanities.
CGS is not accepting applications for the Arlt award this year.
Eligibility Requirements
The recipient must be teaching at a CGS member institution (Regular or Associate), have earned a doctorate within seven years of the award date, and have written a book of scholarly importance in that same time frame.
The fields of competition rotate annually among disciplines within the humanities: classical studies and archaeology, English and north American language or literature, world language and literature, comparative literature, drama/theater arts, art history, criticism, conservation, musicology, linguistics, philosophy, religious studies, and history.
