Solving emerging global grand challenges will require new paradigms and ways of thinking. Creating those paradigms will require transcending or eliminating existing boundaries between fields that constrain thinking, national boundaries that separate scholars, and administrative boundaries that limit innovation. In exploring this topic, delegates may examine crossing disciplinary boundaries to create new knowledge; crossing administrative boundaries in search of innovative models for graduate education; and crossing international boundaries to create international experiences for graduate students and facilitate research collaborations. There is urgent need for holistic, comprehensive solutions to solve global grand challenges like climate change and economic inequality. Rethinking graduate education to better prepare the next generation of scholars and researchers is an important step in meeting these challenges to create a more sustainable, equitable world.
Topics included:
- Local, national, and regional perspectives on interdisciplinary and transnational research
- Creating new, innovative models of graduate education that transcend administrative boundaries
- Examining the role of transdisciplinarity in erasing boundaries between realms of knowledge
- Understanding the ways in which transdisciplinary knowledge creation helps solve global grand challenges that transcend boundaries between fields
- Supporting international student mobility and creating communities of care for displaced students
- Exploring how emerging fields of study, particularly artificial intelligence, can challenge disciplinary and national boundaries between scholars
