Our policy is that graduate students can register for no more than 12 hours per semester, but some programs are having issues with time-to-completion such as accelerated programs. Staff must file special exceptions for each student who needs to register for more than 12 hours. What (if any) policy exists for your graduate programs? Many thanks in advance!

Here is our policy at Brandeis University, and we view 12 credits as the minimum for full-time enrollment.

Students enrolled in full-time degree programs are required to enroll in and maintain a minimum academic load of 12 credits per semester. The maximum credit load is 20 credits per semester, except in the School of Business and Economics (see below). If there is a justifiable reason for a student to enroll in more than 20 credits, they must receive permission from their program advisor and the dean’s office of their school.

    School of Business and Economics:

Full-time Master of Arts students will be limited to enrolling in 18 credits per semester. Master of Science in Finance students will be limited to 18 credits in their first two semesters and 10 credits in their third semester. Master of Science in Business Analytics students will be limited to 19 credits in their first semester and 18 credits in their second semester, and 10 credits in their third semester. Master of Business Administration students will be limited to 20 credits per semester. Enrollment limits can only be overridden by explicit permission of the student’s Program Advisor.
