When a graduate students switches from a thesis track to a non-thesis track in your master’s programs, are they allowed to use the thesis credits in the non-thesis track? We have a course call “Thesis” and it’s the one the student enrolls in to show they are working on their master’s thesis. Right now we do not allow these credits to count in the non-thesis track. But I’m starting to wonder why – many times they switch to a project and often the project is based on or is part of the work of the thesis but they are not going to do a formal thesis any longer. I’m interested in hearing how your institutions are handling this. Thanks!

We do allow use of ‘thesis’ credits in the non-thesis track, when a student switches. However, we do not allow the reverse (i.e., use of non-thesis/research credits to substitute for thesis credits if a student switches from non-thesis to thesis option is not allowed).

Thank you! I am looking forward to learning what other universities are doing.

UMBC allows thesis credits to be used toward a non-thesis master’s in place of either master’s project or independent study credits.

at Qatar University we do not allow these credit hours to be counted in the non thesis track, which created an issue with editing the IP (in progress) grade in the transcript, we reached an agreement with registration department to change it to withdraw

At CWRU we do allow students to use the thesis hours towards their non-thesis track – it can be used as an elective class or if they are switching to a project focused option, it could be used for project hours so long as the project and thesis hours are in alignment/related.
