CGS 2021 Virtual Summer Workshop and New Deans Institute

Join your colleagues at the CGS Virtual Summer Workshop and New Deans Institute to reconnect, network, and explore important issues in graduate education. The virtual meeting is an opportunity to enjoy a unique forum to meet university leaders in your field and exchange ideas and resources on shared challenges and opportunities through formal sessions combined with small breakout group meetings. Given the current dual pandemics and their pervasive effects on the graduate education landscape, many sessions will include timely information specific to both COVID-19 and social and racial justice. We will also look to the future and address topics within the larger context of graduate education.

    Virtual New Deans Institute

The Virtual New Deans Institute, scheduled for July 9, is a program tailored to primary, associate, and assistant deans who began their roles in the past two years. NDI faculty provide introductions to key principles for effective leadership in graduate education.

Elements of the Virtual New Deans Institute:

    • Introductory courses led by experienced graduate deans with programming focused on “the basics” of graduate dean leadership.
    • Insights from new deans reflecting on lessons learned over the course of the first year of leadership.
    • Opportunities to ask questions of course instructors.
    • Participation in a small, virtual cohort of new deans that will meet quarterly beginning in July and led by a veteran dean facilitator.
    • Information about CGS resources that can support your institution.

    Virtual Summer Workshop

The Virtual Summer Workshop offers participants a fresh focus on hot topics that affect every facet of graduate education. Scheduled July 12-14, this year’s Virtual Summer Workshop will continue to provide opportunities to learn about the current issues facing graduate education.

Elements of the Virtual Summer Workshop:

    • Three technical workshops on these topics: dismantling structural racism, graduate student mental health, and the top 10 issues in higher education.
    • Delve further into issues raised in the formal presentations during daily breakout sessions.
    • Concurrent sessions on key issues in graduate education.
    • Information about CGS resources that can support your institution.
